Commission Information

The Department of Business and Professional Regulation supports the Governor in meeting his obligation to appoint qualified, representative and appropriate people to the important leadership roles within the department’s Professional Boards, Council and Commissions. Members are appointed by the Governor, subject to confirmation by the Senate.

The Florida Athletic Commission members work with the department in meeting its mission to “License Efficiently. Regulate Fairly.” There are over 2,900 licensed individuals pursuant to Chapter 548, Florida Statutes and Chapter 61K1-1, Florida Administrative Code.

Activities within the purview of the Florida Athletic Commission include professional boxing, kickboxing and mixed martial arts events held within the State of Florida.

The Florida Athletic Commission is comprised of five members – One member must be a physician licensed pursuant to Chapter 458, Florida Statutes or Chapter 459, Florida Statutes who must maintain an unencumbered license in good standing, and who must, at the time of her or his appointment, have practiced medicine for at least 5 years. Upon the expiration of the term of a commissioner, the Governor shall appoint a successor to serve for a 4-year term. A commissioner whose term has expired shall continue to serve on the commission until such time as a replacement is appointed. If a vacancy on the commission occurs prior to the expiration of the term, it shall be filled for the unexpired portion of the term in the same manner as the original appointment.

Each commission member shall receive per diem and mileage allowances as provided in Section 112.061, Florida Statutes from the place of her or his residence to the place of the meeting and return to the residence.

The Commission meets approximately 4 times a year for one day.  Three meetings a year are held via telephone conference call and one meeting is conducted in person meeting.  Prior to each meeting, there is an average of three days of pre-meeting preparation required. Preparation activities may include reviewing agenda items, reviewing application information, reviewing disciplinary information, and/or reading Florida Statutes and Florida Administrative Code.
